What are lubricants? Lubricants help things work efficiently. They help reduce the amount of friction that happens during sex acts, whether that’s foreplay, sexual intercourse, or masturbation.

Water based lubes:

WBL’s are safe for all different types of acts and are safe to use with toys, even toys with various materials. Because the base ingredient is water, WBL’s reduce/have no scents, tastes, or colors. They are also non-staining. Water Based lubes are really easy to wash off and get off when it comes down to it all you have to do is rinse away with water. The only downfall is they can dry up faster and you may need more, more often or you can add a little bit of water to help get things wet again.  They’re safe to use with latex condoms too but are recommended more for the bedroom and not water play since they wash away so easily.

Oil based lubes:

OBL’s are made from various oils and they’re thicker than water based lubes. Because of that, they last longer (even longer when combined with wbl’s) and these are the better option for anal toys. Oil based lubes can be more difficult to wash off, meaning you have to use soap and water with some elbow grease to get it off. And be cautious because they can stain fabrics. These kind of lubes are safe with  non-latex toys. Oil based lubes are not safe to use with latex condoms because they can cause damage to the condoms and are suggested for partners that don’t use condoms.

Silicone lubes:

Like oil based lubes, silicone lubes are thicker and last a long time. They also come with a higher price tag but seem to be worth the price jump. Not only are they typically hypoallergenic which makes them the perfect choice for folks with allergies or sensitivities, but you need less of the product than you do with oil or water based lubes so while the bottle is more expensive, it’ll last you longer. Along with that, they are not safe to use on silicone toys because they will damage them but these are safe to use with latex condoms. Silicone based lubes are probably the most common and most recommended because of their versatility. These are also the best to use with water play and are equally as good for anal play. They also provide a unique silky feeling on your skin that Oil and water based lubes don’t.

Hybrid lubes:

Hybrid lubes are a combination of water based and silicone formulas. You get the easy clean up of the waterbased with the long lasting effectings of the silicone and get to involve yourself in water play too!

Astroglide was the one brand I found that had a product or multiple products for each type I listed above and better yet? You can get free samples on their website. I think that’s pretty cool especially if you don’t know what one will work best for you and your partner!

** They do make other lubes that are extra gentle for people with severe allergies or sensitivities so don’t feel left out! **

Flavored lubes:

These are typically used for oral sex and come in dozens of flavors like cherry, watermelon, strawberries, caramel, apple etc. Some of these flavored lubes are warming or flavored numbing lubes to assist in giving oral. Like flavored condoms, it’s REALLY IMPORTANT if you’re using flavored things, that they are SUGAR FREE – lubes/condoms/other things that contain sugar are opening you up for a vaginal yeast infection or another bacterial infection.
