Since before the dawn of the written word people have been creating stories, putting characters into life like situations to teach lessons, to learn from mistakes, and to explore and explain what they don’t know. In the Modern Age stories are written down, with characters and stories being passed on from generation to generation. Leaving us with a catalog of characters and stories that people have identified with and grown to love.
Many of these stories and characters have become an integral part of our world and pop culture.
Where even if someone hasn’t read or seen the original work, they still understand the story reference. Such as “Luke, I am your father.” Fanfiction has developed out of this phenomenon.
The use of the word “fanfiction” can be dated back to the late 1930s in reference to fiction that was created by scifi fans but wasn’t quite as good as the “pro” fiction. It became popularized in the 1960s with the advent of Star Trek fiction. And you know where there’s fans thinking up their characters in new situations, there’s going to be some sexy parts. Fanfiction really came into its own with the advent of the internet and the launch of FanFiction.net in 1998. Where erotic fan fiction had its own subcategory for fans to explore the more erotic side of their favorite characters.
50 Shades
Love it or hate it, the best known piece of erotic fanfiction is the multi-million dollar franchise of Fifty Shades of Grey. This started off as a Twilight fanfiction on FanFiction.net. (Sorry didn’t mean to ruin your world if you didn’t know that but it definitely gives a different view when you go back and read/watch them with that lens.) Many other works of romance and erotic fiction take the base plotline of older works and make them new such as revamping Pride and Prejudice with erotic scenes or where Mr Darcy has a BDSM secret. (Google it, you’ll find many different options.)

in talking about erotic fiction (and fanfiction), a few people have set to make a bit of a joke about it. Two of the most well known erotic fanfiction venues are Shipwreck and Potterotica. Based out of San Francisco, Shipwreck is a monthly erotic fanfiction competition, with each month centered around the a different book. They have covered everything from childhood classics like Little House on the Prairie to more adult works like A Song of Ice and Fire. Potterotica on the other hand focuses exclusively on the erotic fanfiction writings of, you guessed it, Harry Potter. Each episode is a new chapter in an erotic fanfiction story, with each complete story being a season. They even throw some “quickies” in between seasons. Both shows have been criticized by fans for taking a comedic approach to something they deem “sacred and serious business.”
FanFiction.net is the OG when it comes to fanfiction. You can find erotic/angst/romance stories centered around many of your favorite books, movies, or tv shows by using their genre and rating filters. There are also a few adult type fan fiction sites that can be found with a simple google search.
Whether you want to see your favorite characters get it on or explore new couple options, erotic fanfiction is a way for fans to explore their favorite characters in new situations while maintaining a world they understand.
